Dubai Work Visa Process for Indians - Step by Step

Start with the fact that saves people the most money, because almost nobody arrives knowing it.
Under UAE labour law, an employer cannot charge you for the cost of hiring you. Not the work permit, not the medical, not the residence permit, and not indirectly through a salary deduction later. The relevant provision is explicit about both direct and indirect recovery.
Plenty of Indian workers pay anyway.
Here's how the process actually runs, who does what at each stage, and where your own money legitimately goes.
Before anything the job has to come first
There is no general work visa you can apply for from India on your own. The sequence begins with a UAE employer who wants to hire you and is licensed to do so.
That employer becomes your sponsor and handles the formal steps. Your job at this stage is documents and patience.
The offer itself should be given to you in writing, in a language you understand, before you commit to anything.
Step one: The work permit
Your employer applies to the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation for permission to employ you. Official guidance is blunt that working without one is illegal, for you and for them.
What it costs, and who pays
Published figures put the cost of issuing or renewing a work permit at roughly AED 250 to approximately AED 3,450, with the amount depending on the company's own classification rather than on you.
A well-classified employer pays at the lower end. That is their bill, not yours.
How long it takes now
This stage used to be the bottleneck. A unified government platform has compressed it considerably, with official material describing a reduction from around fifteen steps and sixteen documents to roughly five of each, and processing falling from about thirty working days to approximately five.
Been asked to pay for your own work permit or medical? That is not how UAE law works. Talk to DU Digital Global before you transfer anything.
Step two: The entry permit
Once the permit clears, an entry permit is issued so you can legally travel and begin the residency formalities.
It carries a window of roughly sixty days, and that window matters. You must enter and complete the remaining steps inside it, so don't let a confirmed permit sit while you tie up loose ends at home.
Step three: The medical fitness test
After arrival, you take a medical at an approved centre. It typically involves a blood test and a chest X-ray, and screens for a defined set of communicable conditions.
Results generally come back within a couple of working days, and the certificate stays valid for approximately three months.
This is a pass-or-fail stage in a real sense. An adverse result on certain conditions can end the application, which is worth understanding before you resign from a job in India.
Step four: Emirates ID and biometrics
You register biometrics, fingerprints and a photograph, and apply for your Emirates ID.
This card is the centre of daily life in the UAE. It identifies you for banking, telecoms, tenancy, government services and medical care, and you will be asked for it constantly.
Allow roughly a week to ten working days for issuance, though timelines vary by emirate and season.
Step five: Health insurance
Cover is mandatory and sits with your employer as an obligation, not a favour. Published estimates put employer-arranged cover somewhere in the region of AED 700 to AED 1,100 a year for basic plans, with requirements differing between emirates.
Check what your policy actually covers before you need it, particularly if your family will join you later.
Step six: The residence permit
The final step links your residency to your sponsor electronically. One thing surprises arrivals there is generally no sticker in your passport any more. Residency is recorded digitally and tied to your Emirates ID.
Don't wait for a stamp that isn't coming. Confirm your status through the official channels instead.

How long the whole thing takes
Estimates vary with the employer's efficiency more than anything else, but reporting generally describes roughly two to four weeks from work permit to residency, with faster outcomes where everything is submitted cleanly through the unified platform.
Delays usually come from one of three places documents that aren't attested, a name spelled differently across papers, or a medical appointment booked late. All three are within your control.
What you should be paying for
Your legitimate costs are narrow.
• Attestation of your educational certificates in India, which is the step that takes longest.
• Your own travel and any personal documentation.
• Family visas, if you choose to sponsor dependants later, which is separate from your own employment.
Anything else quoted to you as a visa fee deserves a question.
