Why

OVERVIEW

Why Panama?

The Republic of Panama is one of the Western Hemisphere’s most established and legally transparent destinations for internationally mobile investors and retirees. Its stable, dollarised economy, strategic geographical position as the bridge between North and South America, and a well-regarded banking sector make it a credible choice for those seeking a formally issued travel document alongside a structured residency pathway.

The Panama Traveler Passport Program — anchored in the Private Income Retiree Visa — offers applicants a government-issued Panamanian travel passport valid for the duration of a five-year fixed-term deposit, without conferring Panamanian citizenship or creating dual nationality conflicts.

Program

HIGHLIGHTS

Program at a Glance

Government-Issued Panama Traveler Passport
The passport is issued by the Panamanian government under the Private Income Retiree Visa framework. It is a formally recognised travel document — not a citizenship document — and does not affect the holder’s original nationality.
No Dual Nationality Conflict
The passport shows the holder’s original nationality and does not trigger dual nationality provisions. Suitable for nationals of countries that prohibit dual citizenship, including China, Ukraine, and Latvia.
Capital Remains Applicant-Controlled
The minimum USD 280,000 fixed-term deposit is held at Banco Nacional de Panamá or Caja de Ahorros. The principal remains the applicant’s asset throughout the five-year term.
Broad International Travel Access
The Panama Traveler Passport provides visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to over 75 destinations, spanning Europe, Latin America, Asia, and Africa — with the scope of access subject to Panama’s bilateral agreements at the time of use.
Renewable for Continued Access
Upon renewal of the fixed-term deposit for a further five years, the passport and associated residency status can be renewed, providing continuity of access and status.

OVERVIEW

Program Structure

The program is structured around the Private Income Retiree Visa, which requires the applicant to place a minimum fixed-term deposit (CD) at a qualifying Panamanian state bank, generating a minimum monthly interest income of USD 850. Once the visa is approved, the Panama Traveler Passport is issued.

  • A minimum USD 280,000 fixed-term deposit is placed at Banco Nacional de Panamá or Caja de Ahorros.
  • The CD must generate at least USD 850 per month in interest to meet the visa income threshold.
  • The passport is valid for five years — the lifetime of the CD — and is renewable upon CD renewal.
  • The passport reflects the applicant’s original nationality; no citizenship transfer occurs.
  • Dependents (spouse, children, and in some cases parents) may be included with supporting documentation.
  • Due diligence and KYC/AML compliance is conducted on all applicants as required by law.

Interest generated by the CD meets the monthly income threshold required by the visa.

Notes

CONSIDERATIONS

Important Practical Notes

This Is Not a Citizenship Program

The Panama Traveler Passport does not confer Panamanian citizenship. It reflects the holder’s original nationality and is issued for the duration of the fixed-term deposit only.

CD Must Remain Active

The fixed-term deposit must remain in place at the qualifying bank for the full five-year term. Early withdrawal would affect the validity of the visa and passport.

Two In-Country Visits Required

The process requires two visits to Panama — the first to open the bank account and submit documents, and the second (typically 4–6 months later) to complete the residency ID and passport application.

Full KYC/AML Compliance

All applicants undergo a rigorous due diligence and compliance process as required by Panamanian law. A reference letter from a bank, accountant, or lawyer is required at onboarding.

Renewal is Available

Upon renewal of the CD for a further five-year term, the passport and residency status can be renewed, maintaining continuity of access and legal status.
