UK Travelers to India: Navigating the New eVisa Rules 2026

The relationship between the UK and India is historic, but visa regulations have had a rocky few years. During and immediately after the pandemic, the India eVisa was suspended for UK citizens. British travelers were forced to book physical appointments at visa centers, leading to massive queues and months-long delays.

The Good News: As of late 2022/2023, The eVisa is fully restored for UK nationals. You no longer need to stand in the rain outside a visa center. You can apply from your smartphone.

However, the new system comes with specific nuances for British travelers. At DU Global, we process thousands of UK-to-India applications. This guide ensures your winter sun trip to Goa or business trip to Mumbai goes smoothly.

The eVisa Options for Brits

  1. 30-Day Tourist eVisa
  • Best for: Short holidays.
  • Validity: 30 days from date of arrival.
  • Entry: Double Entry.
  • Cost: Lowest fees (approx. $25 depending on season).

2. 1-Year Tourist eVisa

    • Best for: Frequent visitors.
    • Validity: 365 days from grant.
    • Entry: Multiple Entry.
    • Stay: Max 180 days per calendar year.

    3. 5-Year Tourist eVisa

      • Best for: Long-term planning.
      • Validity: 5 Years.
      • Cost: High value (approx. $80).

      4. Business eVisa

        • Validity: 1 Year.
        • Requirement: Business card and invitation letter from Indian company.

The “British Subject” vs. “British Citizen” Trap

          This is a critical distinction.

          • British Citizens: Eligible for eVisa.
          • British Overseas Citizens / British Subjects / BNO: NOT eligible for eVisa. You must apply for a regular paper visa at the High Commission.
          • DU Global Tip: Check your passport bio page under “Nationality.” If it says anything other than “British Citizen,” do not apply online. It will be rejected.

          The Pakistani Origin Rule

If you, your parents, or your grandparents were born in Pakistan (or held Pakistani nationality), you are NOT eligible for an eVisa, regardless of your British passport.

            • The Rule: You must apply for a standard paper visa.
            • The Risk: If you hide this fact on the eVisa form, you will be permanently banned. The form specifically asks about “Pakistan heritage.” Be honest.

            Common Application Errors

              • Surname Issues: British passports often have middle names. The Indian form asks for “Surname” and “Given Name.” Put your middle name in the “Given Name” field.
              • Profession: Do not write “Journalist” or “Photographer” or “Media” unless you want a specialized Media Visa (which is hard to get). If you are a journalist going for a holiday, be prepared for scrutiny, or apply for a Journalist Visa to be safe.
              • Photo: Do not scan the physical photo from your passport. You must take a new digital photo (square, white background).

              Processing Times

                • Standard: 72 hours.
                • Reality: Often approved in 24 hours.
                • Advice: Apply at least 4 days before travel. Don’t leave it to the airport lounge.

                Why Use DU Global?

The Indian government website often rejects UK debit cards (Monzo/Revolut) or times out during payment.

                  • Secure Payment: We process the payment locally.
                  • Data Check: We spot the “Pakistani Origin” risk or “Journalist” risk before you submit, saving you from a black mark on your immigration record.
