Who Is Eligible for a UAE Golden Visa? Categories Explained

There's a number in the Golden Visa rules that matters more to most Indian professionals than AED 2 million ever will.

It's AED 30,000 a month. Basic salary. Not gross, and not counting your housing allowance.

Clear that line in an approved profession and ten years of UAE residence is on the table without buying a square foot of property. Fall short because your package leans on allowances, and the same job title gets you nowhere.

Almost nobody explains eligibility this way. The official list has five categories, which is tidy for the government and not much use when you're trying to work out where you personally stand. Sort those five by what you'll actually be asked to prove and something more practical appears: three gates, each with a completely different kind of lock.

Gate one: money you can evidence

The investor route, and the only gate where the answer is a figure.

AED 2 million in capital, held either as property or as a stake in an establishment paying at least AED 250,000 a year in taxes. Public investment carries ten years; real estate carries five.

What has shifted recently matters more than the number itself. Mortgaged and off-plan purchases used to be awkward or excluded. Reporting through 2026 indicates financed property now counts where the purchase price reaches the AED 2 million threshold, and that the old rule requiring half the value paid upfront was dropped in February.

If someone told you years ago that a home loan disqualified you, that advice has aged.

Bought with a mortgage and assumed you were out? Have DU Digital Global check your position against the current rule before you write the idea off.

Gate two: credentials on paper

This is the gate most working professionals walk through, and it has two locks rather than one.

The salary lock

Cabinet Resolution 65 of 2022 sets out the specialist route, covering science, engineering, IT, law, healthcare and education. The threshold is AED 30,000 a month, and since 2024 that has meant basic salary, with allowances taken out of the calculation.

Read your contract rather than your payslip total. A package worth AED 35,000 built on AED 24,000 basic plus allowances does not clear the line, and applicants tend to discover this late.

The certificate lock

Foreign qualifications don't count until the UAE says they do. Degrees issued in India go through Ministry of Education equivalency, reported at around 30 days, then a recognition approval taking a further week to ten days, before Golden Visa pre-approval even starts.

Build that into your timeline. It is the quietest reason applications run months longer than people expected.

Students stand at this gate too, on academic evidence instead of professional evidence: certificates of excellence and recommendation letters, five years for strong secondary students and ten for high performers at university.

Gate three: a decision someone else makes about you

The gate you cannot prepare your way through alone.

Entrepreneurs need a letter from an accredited incubator or the relevant authority in the emirate. Several exceptional talent sub-categories run on nomination by a UAE entity rather than a form you submit yourself. Humanitarian pioneers and frontline workers are recognised through certificates of appreciation, documented contribution, or at least five years of service.

You can have the project, the record and every document in order and still be waiting on a third party to say yes. That conversation belongs at the start of your process, not the end of it.

If your route runs through nomination or endorsement, the paperwork is the easy part. DU Digital Global helps identify who has to sign, and what they need to see.

Where 2026 widened the field

Reporting through 2026 points to the professional gate opening considerably. Nurses, teachers, e-sports professionals and digital creators have all been named as newly qualifying, alongside specialists in AI, data and clean energy.

Family rules were reported to soften as well, with dependent children covered further into full-time education than the old cut-off allowed.

Treat all of that as a reason to check rather than a promise. The government's own Golden Visa page still lists the five core categories, so confirm your specific profession on the ICP portal before building plans around a headline.

What eligibility never depends on

Three points, because the noise around this visa is relentless.

Your nationality. Indian applicants are assessed on exactly the same categories as everyone else. There is no India-specific route.

A lifetime version. It doesn't exist. ICP denied those reports in 2025. Visas run for five or ten years and are renewed.

Paying the right person. Applications go through official government channels. An adviser assesses eligibility and prepares documents. Nobody sells approvals.

FAQs

Is the AED 30,000 figure gross or basic?

Basic. Allowances were removed from the calculation in 2024, which narrowed the pool considerably.

Does a mortgaged property qualify?

Current reporting says yes, where the purchase price meets AED 2 million. Confirm the position before you commit to anything.

Does my Indian degree need clearing first?

On the specialist route, equivalency and recognition through the Ministry of Education come before pre-approval.

What if I fit more than one gate?

You apply under one. They carry different durations and very different evidence burdens, so compare before choosing.

Before you check anything else

Work out which gate you're standing at. Documents, timelines and cost all follow from that, and preparing for the wrong one is how months quietly disappear.

Not sure which gate is yours? Send DU Digital Global your profession, contract structure or investment position, and we'll tell you where you actually stand.
